One of the most popular things that tourists eat in Singapore is roti prata. We try and incorporate it into all of our food tours. The crispiness of the bread the theatre of the chef and the flavours of the curry sauce. In fact just last week one of our guests from USA emailed asking for a prata recipe to try during lockdown.
During our corporate food tours we like to give teams the chance to make their own dishes. Flipping prata is always a hit.
Our friends at Marhaba in Geylang Serai have hosted our tours for years. But it is not prata that they are famous for. Marhaba is the place to go if you want murtabak. For those not familiar, murtabak is similar to prata in that it is a bread made from the same dough. The difference comes in the filling. A murtabak has many different types of filling. At Marhaba they specialise in chicken, tuna and mutton. The murtabak comes with a generous helping of their in house made curry sauce. Many food critics in Singapore have said that it’s the best value murtabak on the island.
Family run restaraunt.
One of the great things about Marhaba is the staff. At the helm of the restaurant is Asiah. She is always at the front of the shop, chatting to regulars and making sure everyone is well fed. Once you have visited a few times the chefs will get to know you. It is clearly a place where people go to meet as well as eat. Her son is often there lending a hand and is keen to learn the ropes so he can take over one day.
