Diversity in Singapore is one of the key teaching modules that we offer for our virtual learning journeys. School students in Singapore are incredibly lucky. Unlike a lot of other countries, Singapore is a very diverse community. Students celebrate festivals from Hindu, Muslim and Christian faiths. They are familiar with the holidays of the Chinese, Malay and Indian communities.
There are 3 major ethnic groups that we always talk about. Chinese, Malay and Indian. But there are many more below the surface, each with their own unique characteristics, cultures and beliefs.
Our virtual learning journeys focus on different ethnic groups of Singapore. We take a closer look at what life is like in each group. From the food they eat, to the clothes that they wear during festivals. The diversity in Singapore is so strong that we have literally hundreds of cultures to talk about and showcase.
Providing diversity learning journeys
Our team of expert guides and facilitators are currently busy visiting schools up and down Singapore. Each lesson focuses on a different culture. The guide will hold a 45 minute sessions with the students. In this session we have video’s, photographs and story-telling. This way their learning is not only fun but interactive and memorable. Our guides love to get the students involved. Probing questions, encouraging opinion sharing and interaction amongst the classroom.
The guides are dressed in the clothing they are representing. Adding an extra feeling of authenticity to the experience. Each class also has a small snack provided which comes from a local business in the community we are discussing. For example, if we are discussing the Peranakan community we would provide a small Nonya dumpling for each students to taste. (These are tailor made to suit the dietary requirements of the school).
Diversity topics
We have covered many different cultures of Singapore in our virtual learning journeys. Most schools like to talk about 3 cultures so as not to overload the students. We use guides from different communities to come and share their stories. We have Peranakan, Eurasian, Malay, Hokkien, Teow Chew, Haka, and many more communities represented in our guide pool.
We are extremely lucky in Singapore to have so many interesting and vibrant cultures on our doorstep. It is our duty to open this world to our students so that SIngapore can continue to flourish in multi-culturalism.
