Beef Rendang

Today Singapore is celebrating Hari Raya Haji. Otherwise known as the festival of sacrifice. Today muslims around the world remember the sacrifice that prophet Ibrahim was willing to make to god. He was about to sacrifice his own son when god stopped him and allowed the sacrifice of a sheep instead.
As with every festival in Singapore, food is one of the main events.
In Singapore over the next few days it will be common to see muslim families going from house to house. Hari Raya Haji is a great time to visit family and friends and enjoy food together. Here’s a list of 5 dishes you can try to join in the festival.

5 Hari Raya Haji food ideas

Beef Rendang:
Everyone loves a good rendang and Hari Raya is a perfect time to enjoy one. The dishes slow cooking allows the family chef to prepare other dishes and snacks whilst the Rendang slowly bubbles away on the stove. Our good friends at Minang do a fantastic rendang

Ketupat:
This boiled rice treat is often served alongside Rendang. The rice is packed into coconut leaf packets and boiled giving it a milky aroma and taste.

Satay:
The perfect dish for any gathering. Satay is a national addiction here in Singapore. We like to have a peanut sauce on the side and some chopped cucumber. This also goes well with Ketapat.

Lontong:
A bowl of lontong contains a coconut milk broth, vegetables and rice cakes. It is a bit like a laksa in a way. Common in our neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia this is a favourite breakfast dish.

Pulat Hitam:
This is one of our favourite desserts in Singapore. Not because it is so tasty (which it is) but because it looks so uninviting. Black glutinous rice with a splash of coconut milk, the dish can look a bit scary. It is perfect to eat after you’ve had a big feast. Not too heavy and is actually quite healthy. This is a favourite with our guests on the Lunch with the locals tour

There are loads of other dishes that you can enjoy this festival weekend. These are just a sample.
