One of the best things about Singapore is the abundance of really good, fresh street food. Azmi’s chapati stall is one of the best examples there is of this. Set inside a non descript coffee shop Azmi’s has been making and selling chapatis since the 1940s. Right in the middle of Little India, we always visit Azmis on our food tours in Little India.

Here’s one of our corporate food tours digging in to Azmi’s chapatis.

A chapati is an Indian flat bread, made from wheat flour. Usually you’d eat a chapati accompanied by some curry or dahl. At Azmi’s they make their own dough and flatten it out creating a mountain of uncooked circular flatbreads. One by one the chefs put them on the hot plate so when customers order they are guaranteed the freshest possible chapati.

The flour that is used to make the chapatis here is milled 2 roads away. Every morning the chefs take a fresh delivery and then begin making the flat bread.

Food made right in front of you.

One of the things that has made Azmi famous over the years is the fact that you can watch the cooking process direct from the street. Locals and tourists are drawn by the smell of the cooking bread. Another thing that Azmi has become famous for is the keema curry that is served with the bread. Minced lamb in a rich curry sauce, red onions and cucumber make a great pairing with the chapatis. If you’re a bit more daring you could opt for the goat brain curry option.

Azmis is run by a group of elder Indian muslim men. They have been doing this for decades. Now they have got used to our tours coming and having photos taken but even so it’s best to let them get on with what they do best. Cooking and serving one of our favourite dishes in Little India.

If you’re in Little India go and try their chapatis. You won’t find better anywhere in Singapore.
