We’ve mentioned in previous posts about Eng’s wanton noodles. Back not so long ago there was only one stall. This made life easy for everyone. If you mentioned you were going to Eng’s everyone knew you were going to the Eng’s at 287 Tanjong Katong road. But times change, and now we have a few Eng’s to choose from.
To cut a long story short the original Eng’s owners were involved in a dispute with each other. As a result if you walk down Tanjong Katong road now you will see 2 different Eng’s. On either side of the road, vying for your dollar. Eng’s Char Siew Wanton Mee is now run by Mr Eng’s children (248 Tanjong Katong road). When they split with their previous business partners they took 2 of their chefs with them. They continued to make their famous springy noodles right across the road from their old shop. We don’t want to get too deep into why the partners split. It does seem like if you want to support the family business and not a bigger company, you should be going to Eng’s at 248 Tanjong Katong road. Not the one at 287.
What makes them so good?
They are famous for 2 things. First is the springiness of their freshly made noodles. They haven’t dropped standards since we last visited. It is strange how most wanton noodle places in Singapore don’t seem to put as much care into their noodles as they do at Eng’s. The second thing they are famous for is their chilli sauce. You are warned by the label on the bottle to expect fire and fire you get. Actually since the split they have ever so slightly decreased the heat.
On our food tour we constantly have guests telling us that chilli is no problem. Food tourists are a proud bunch so who are we to tell them any different. This sauce is always a leveller.
If you are a big eater, there is nothing stopping you from visiting both shops. This is one for the real food lover but there are worse ways to spend an afternoon in Singapore.
Let us know what you think of both of them.
